Introduction

Kuvasz is used to call one dog that belongs to the Kuvasz dog breed. When calling more than one of these dogs, the word Kuvaszok is used.

History

The Kuvasz is an ancient breed that is believed to have arrived in Hungary from Tibet during the thirteenth century. These Hungarian flock guard dogs were created to be a multi-purpose breed. They are hunters, flock guarding and companion dogs that excel at all-purpose. They were impressive in all aspects that Kuvasz became popular with the nobility of Hungary and its surrounding region. Hungary’s King Mattias I or Mátyás Hunyadi had several Kuvasz dogs serving as his bodyguard! The origin of this dog’s name has two versions. In Turkey, Kuvasz translates to “armed guards of the nobility”. In the Arab speaking world, Kuvasz translates to “Archer”. Today, these Hungarian working dogs are still being used in their native country as well as in other parts of the world as guardian dogs.

Personality

The Kuvasz is a strong-willed, insightful breed, mild and faithful to the family. These Hungarian dogs will be wary but well- mannered with strangers. It is sharp and inquisitive and can be self-sufficient. These dogs’ protective nature may come as rough during play. But they are usually great with children.

Bred For

Developed as a multi-purpose dog in Hungary. These dogs became famous for their impressive skills in hunting, guarding livestock as well as their companion traits. They were used as royal bodyguards.

Environment

These Hungarian flock guardians are not fit for an apartment-style of living. They require a home that has at least a large-sized yard. They are not dogs for areas experiencing warm or humid weather conditions.

Grooming

The Kuvasz dogs are known to constantly shed their fur year-round. They will shed seasonally only in cold climate conditions.

Training

This type of dog is easy to housebreak. Having them properly obedience trained would take some time but it is doable.

Health

Kuvasz is known to suffer medical conditions that affect the different senses including hearing and eyesight problems. These large dogs are also known to acquire problems that affect the bones and joints that include various orthopedic problems, hip dysplasia, and thyroid problems. They are also known to acquire von Willebrand’s disease.

Exercise

They are known to have high activity needs that will be sufficiently satisfied with the daily exercise done vigorously. Long and brisk walks or jogging every day is the minimum exercise requirement for this dog breed.
