History
The Kyi-Leo is a very young dog breed with its origin starting just in the 1950s and its formal breeding program started just in the year 1972. This particular breed was created by accident! The first Kyi-Leo was the product of a Maltese dog crossed with a Lhasa Apso. When the breed’s serious breeding program started in the early ’70s, they were named for the two progenitors. “Kyi” means Dog in Tibet where the Lhasa Apso originates. The Leo on its name, which is Latin for Lion, pays respect to the dogs’ Maltese roots. Maltese dogs are also known as the Maltese Lion Dog breed in its native country.

Personality
The Kyi-Leos are like its accidental progenitors, inheriting both Maltese and Lhasa Apso traits that make them ideal companion dogs. Kyi-Leo dogs display impressive obedience, affection, and liveliness. These very loving and playful companions are known to form bonds with their families. These tiny dogs are very quick learners and highly trainable. All in all, the Kyi-Leo dogs are family-friendly and naturally aloof towards strangers.

Bred For
They were accidentally bred from crossing the Maltese and Lhasa Apso. These dogs are now bred to be companions. The Kyi-Leo dogs are intelligent dogs that can be trained to do tricks. These dogs are also very alert making them great watchdogs.

Environment
The Kyi-Leo dog breed is an indoor pet. They do need to be taken on walks every day to have them mentally and physically fit.

Grooming
These dogs require moderate and regular grooming attention. Brushing their coat should be done regularly. These dogs are known to have bad breath and should have their teeth brushed every day as well. Special attention should be done with these dogs’ ears on a weekly basis. These are dogs that will shed hair in average amounts.

Training
Kyi-Leo dogs are naturally bright and will always show eagerness to please their handlers. This makes the Kyi-Leo as one of the easiest dog breeds to train.

Health
Kyi-Leo is a relatively young dog breed and their medical history records are not that substantial to predict common medical issues that may plague them. Early medical records do show that these dogs are somewhat prone to acquire slipped patellas.

Exercise
The Kyi-Leos are companion dogs bred to be indoor pets. They should be taken outside and for walks every day to have them well-balanced.
