History

The Lagotto Romagnolo is an ancient water retriever breed that originates in Italy and has been in existence since the 16th century. These Italian water retrievers were first bred in the marshlands of Ravenna and the lowlands of Comacchio. They were first created to be a dog that can search for truffles on all kind of ground composition and terrain.

These dogs can search truffles anywhere. Their highly developed sense of smell and impressive ability to seriously focus on a single scent makes them ideal, and the only dog breed that can do this task.

Lagotto Romagnolo is a hardworking dog that is gifted with an amazing and highly developed nose that is efficient in searching truffles. This breed is one focused canine, concentrating on the slightest scent and will not be distracted by other scents or anything that can divert them to find what they are looking for. These are dogs known to be keen, loyal and very affectionate towards their owners. They get along with other dogs as well as other pet animals. This is dog breed that is a great family pet to have, people oriented and knows how to use their brains when out in the field. They are highly trainable not just because of their intelligence but also because of their genuine obedience.

Lagotto dogs can live in the city, suburbs and the country. They can kept as apartment pets provided they are sufficiently exercised, which is not an easy feat as they are required to be taken on daily walks, weekly swimming as well as the occasional mud bathe!

Grooming

Lagotto Romagnolos are dogs that should be regularly groomed. It is recommended to have their dense and curly coats brushed regularly. These dogs shed little to no hair.
