Introduction

Leonberger was bred to look like lions. Fortunately, the lion-like trait is just in their appearance! They are so friendly that these dogs are fondly called the Gentle Giants of Germany. These large mastiff dogs gained popularity with the European royalty during the middle of the 19th Century. They were treated as status symbols with recorded ownership by several royalties including Austria’s Empress Elizabeth. Other European royals such as Italian King Umberto I and the German Chancellor Prince Otto von Bismarck was known to fancy this dog breed.

History

The Leonberger can trace its origins in Germany’s Wurttemberg region. They got their name from their specific place of origin which is the city of Leonberg, Germany. The recorded pioneer breeder was German canine fancier Mr. Heinrich Essing. He wanted a large and intimidating dog that resembles that physical appearance of lions, which is the town’s official sigil. To produce this desired look, Mr. Essing developed the Leonbergers by crossing various lines three large dogs. These are the Great Pyrenees, the Landseer Newfoundland dogs as well as the Saint Bernard dog breed. The result? A dog breed that is similar in appearance to the lion in the town of Leonberger’s crest.

Personality

Leonberger dogs are one of Germany’s top choices when it comes to family dogs. They are naturally bred to be companions that should be excellent when around every member of the family. Their affectionate and very playful temperament makes them ideal for children of all ages. Their size and natural instinct to protect also makes them great guard dogs for the family.

Bred For

These large German dogs were developed to resemble their hometown’s lion sigils. They are popularly used as companions today.

Environment

These giant German mastiffs are not great to have in small residential spaces. Apartments or condo units in residential complexes are not recommended. They are dogs that prefer cold weather conditions. The ideal home settings for the Leonbergers are homes with a large yard where they can move about.

Grooming

Leonbergers are bit high maintenance with their grooming needs. Brushing their coat and ear and teeth cleaning should be done every week. These giant dogs shed hair heavily and seasonally.

Training

Training a Leonberger dog will take patience and a positive training approach. Having these dogs trained during their puppyhood stage is the ideal time.

Health

The lion-looking Leonberger are giant dogs that commonly acquire elbow and hip dysplasia. These dogs are also known to be plagued by various medical problems including Addison’s disease, various types of cancers, ectropion, and entropion. There are some lines of the Leonberger that develop OCD and hypothyroidism.

Exercise

The Leonberger, surprisingly for their sheer size, does not require a lot of activity to satisfy their low exercise needs. Taking them on walks every day should be done just to have these dogs stay physically fit.
