History

The Lithuanian Hound or Lietuviu Skalikas is a hunting dog breed that originates from Telšiai, Lithuania. This Eastern European dog breed has been used by Lithuanian huntsmen for several hundreds of years. They were specifically bred to re-create the original Curlandish Hounds, a breed that was associated with the Latvian Hound dog breed. Local Lithuanian hunters created this breed by crossing native big-game hound dogs with Polish and Russian Hounds as well as the Beagle.

By the 1970s, the Lithuanian Hound was close to extinction, with a population that is very low in number. During the 1976 to 1977 hunting season, a large number of Lithuanian Hound were tragically killed by wild boars, lowering their numbers furthermore and was very close to being decimated. After that tragic season, the Lithuanian Cynological Council created a kennel facility that was specifically and specially built to raise Lithuanian Hounds according to its original standards.

Today, this breed is one of the rarest dog breeds in the world and is commonly found in the modern Republic of Lithuania.

Personality

The Lithuanian Hound is considered to be a very impressive hound dog that is determined to catch its prey when out on the field. These sighthounds are very effective when going after rabbits, hares, bears and foxes. These are very persistent hunting dogs prized for their speed and vigor when going after their prey. They are dogs that will display very pleasant disposition when around their family. Fanciers of this breed also prized these dogs for their “splendid” voice. Overall these hound dogs are very impressive hunters that will display its dexterity, high energy and free-spirited nature.
