Introduction

The Llewellin Setter is a variety of the English Setter dog breed dog breed that was specifically bred by Mr. R.L. Purcell Llewellin to perfect food hunting dogs and field trials.

There are two lines of this breed: The American Llewellins line and The Dashing Bondhu line.

History

The Llewellin Setter is a variety of the English setter breed. This variety was first developed in the United States between the late 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century. They are prized for being champions as foot hunting dogs that excel in-game fowls as well as excellent family companions.

There are two major lines of the Llewellin Setter breed. The first line is known as the American Llewellins group that includes the Blizzard, Roycelle, Toy’O, Bomber and Glastone Llewellin Setters. This is the line of setters that were imported from England and bred for early American field trial competitions.

The second line if called the Dashing Bondhu. This particular line of Llewellin Setters was personally developed by the breed’s creator, Mr. R.L. Purcell Llewellin. This line did not reach the United States until the 1960s.

Personality

Llewellin Setters are good-natured, mild, and friendly dogs. The field typesetters will be more active than the average English setter breed. These dogs just love the outdoors. They are known to get along with almost everyone, including children. This English setter field type is especially suited to hunting and trial competitions.

Bred For

Llewellin Setters were bred to find and point game in open country.

Environment

Llewellin Setters are not recommended for apartment living and do best with at least an average-sized yard.

Grooming

Llewellin Setter requires regular combing and brushing of the soft, flat, medium-length coat is all that is required to keep it in excellent condition. These are dogs that shed hair in average amounts.

Training

Llewellin Setters will be a bit difficult to train and should be trained by experienced dog handlers or professional dog trainers.

Health

Llewellin Setters are commonly plagued with obesity and hip dysplasia.

Exercise

Llewellin Setter is a dog that demands to be taken on long and brisk walks or jogging sessions every day.
