Introduction

The Longhaired Weimaraner dog breed is one of two existing varieties of Weimar Pointers that are being bred today. The Longhaired Weimer Pointer is considered as a fault and treated as a disqualification on American Kennel Club hosted dog shows. This particular Weimer coat variety is rare in North America but is very common in Europe.

History

The Longhaired Weimaraner can trace its roots during the 19th century in Germany’s royal Weimer court. These are dogs that were bred by the German aristocrats which aimed to have a hunting dog that can go after large game animals that dwells deep in the Thüringen Forest. Later on, the Weimaraner evolved into a bird hunter and impress sportsmen for their adaptability and versatile capabilities. Today, Weimaraners continue to serve as hunting dogs in their native country but are gaining popularity as a companion pet.

Personality

Longhaired are excellent hunting dogs that earned the nickname “Grey Ghost” when out hunting because of their stealth skills. These are dogs that are packed with high energy, high intelligence and a fun-loving outlook towards everyone in general. These dogs are also known to have a very strong drive to work hard.

Bred For

Longhaired Weimaraners are commonly bred in Europe to be bird dogs and water retrievers.

Environment

Longhaired Weimaraners can be kept as apartment pets provided that their owners if they are sufficiently exercised.

Grooming

The shorthaired and longhaired varieties of the Weimaraners are easy to groom and requires little attention to keep it in tip-top shape. These are dogs that shed hair in average amounts.

Training

Longhaired Weimaraners will be tough to housebreak and obedience trained if handlers have no prior experience with this particular dog breed. This is because of the Weimer Pointer’s trait of being stubborn and single-minded. It is advised to have them professionally trained.

Health

Longhaired Weimaraners have a record of being at high risk in acquiring gastric problems, various cancers, eye disorders, dermoid cysts and the Von Willebrand’s disease.

Exercise

Longhaired Weimaraners are field dogs that require sufficient activity to satisfy their high level of energy. Owners should take these dogs on long brisk walks every day. Vigorous activities and playtime should be included in their schedule.
