Introduction

The Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog is among the dog breeds that are considered to be very rare. This dog breed is recognized by the State of Louisiana to be their official State Dog. History

The Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog’s official origin is the subject of some debate. Most dog breeders believe that they are the dogs brought by early European settlers when they first settled in the State of Louisiana. Other dog breeders believed that they are the direct descendants of crosses between indigenous dogs used by Native Americans and the dogs brought by the European settlers including the Spanish explorers and French pioneers. Whatever historical accounts you believe, there is no changing the impression that the Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog has made to the rich history of their home state. They even named this dog breed as their office State Dog.

Personality

The Catahoula Hog Dog as they are also called in their native State are dogs that love being dominant. This trait makes them dog-aggressive and should be watched closely when around strangers. This also includes when children and other animals are present. They will show their affection and playful side when around their family. They are naturally protective and will be wary of new faces.

Bred For

The Official State of Dog of Louisiana was bred and used by early European settlers as hunting and herding livestock. Native American thrives uses these dogs in hunting large game. They are famous for being feral hog hunters that hunt in teams of three!

Environment

Catahoula Leopard Dogs are not ideal for apartment living conditions. Some do adapt to this type of living style but it really depends on the consistency of their owners. They are dogs that can live in dog houses but should not be left neglected. Having them tied-up will either make these dogs very shy or extremely aggressive. These dogs prefer warm weather conditions and will suffer in cold climates.

Grooming
