Introduction

The Mastin Pesado or Heavy Mastiff is a variety of Mastín Español or Spanish Mastiffs. These are the heavier and larger Mastín Español dogs that are commonly used in Spain’s mountainous Northern and Northwestern regions. Currently, a huge population of this heavy Spanish Mastiffs can be found in the Spanish province of Leon.

History

Mastín Pesado Español is a line of Mastín Español or Spanish Mastiffs that originated in Spain during the times of the ancient Phoenicians. This particular Spanish Mastiff variety is bred to adapt to Spain’s mountainous regions and effectively do work as a flock guardian, livestock protector as well as watchdogs in rugged mountain terrain and high altitude weather conditions. Mastín Pesado dogs comes from a breed that is known to be the father and progenitor of the Portuguese Rafeiro do Alentejo as well one of the ancestors of the modern mastiff breeds including the Dogo Argentino and the St. Bernard.

The Mastin Pesado Español is the largest of all Spanish dog breeds. It is also officially recognized as the National Dog Breed of Spain.

Personality

Mastin Pesado dogs are known to be extremely protecting guard dogs that will be aggressively territorial; they are after all bred to be innate guard dogs. The Spanish mastiffs will be reticent and suspicious dogs when around strangers. These large dogs will display immense affection towards friends and families. They are naturally smart, independent, alert and very watchful but also very composed.

Training

Mastin Pesado dogs should be trained extensively for obedience and socialization.

Health

Mastin Pesado dogs are generally healthy. This large dog breed may suffer from the hip dysplasia.

Exercise

The Mastin Pesado is a large and heavy dogs “heavy” activities. Taking these large dogs on Long walks every day is not just recommended, it is a requirement!
