History

The precise date of origins of the Miniature Pekingese dog breed is unclear. Most dog historians believed that they were first developed during the middle part of the 8th Century, making them one of the oldest dog breed coming out of China. They were named after the city of Peking, now known as Beijing. These dogs were originally bred as royal sacred dogs that ward off negative spirits. During the Tan Dynasty, only the royal family and the selected nobility can own Pekingese dogs. They were treated so sacredly that stealing them is punishable by death! During the latter part of the 18th century, this toy dog breed from Asia reached British soil. There are records of Queen Victoria accepting a dog of this breed. In the United States, their popularity starting in the early parts of the 20th century.

Personality

Bred for the Tan Dynasty’s royal court, Pekingese is regal in stature and dignified stance. They are also a snob, these dogs’ pampered history made them a bit too stubborn. Some lines of Pekingese dogs will show unfriendly behavior towards children and are known to be dog-aggressive.

Miniature Pekingese are royal companions during the Tan Dynasty. These dogs were also bred exclusively for the royal court and treated as sacred dogs that wards off evil spirits.

The Mini Pekingese dog breed is known to be very stubborn. This trait makes them a bit difficult to train and hard to housebreak as well.

Health

Miniature Pekingese dogs are known to suffer and acquire various medical conditions and health issues. The common health-related problem for this breed is brachycephalic syndrome, intervertebral disk disease, umbilical hernia, corneal ulceration and stenotic nares. They are also allergic to anesthesia and will have a very difficult time in hot climates.

Exercise

Mini Pekingese dogs are toy dogs, making them very low maintenance when it comes to exercise needs. They do not require to be taken on walks every day.
