Introduction

The Montenegrin Mountain Hound or Crnogorski Planinski Gonič is the modern name for the dog breed that was once called the Yugoslavian Mountain Hound or Jugoslovenski Planinski Gonic. This is the same dog breed that is one of two varieties of the original Yugoslavian Hound breed.

If you were a fan of the former television talk show program Late Night with Conan O’Brien, the scandalous and often politically incorrect Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog puppet is the single most memorable and quite popular depiction of the Montenegrin Mountain Hound.

History

The Montenegrin Mountain Hound or formerly known as the Yugoslavian Mountain Hound breed is considered to be a very old dog breed that originated in the mountainous regions of the Balkans, specifically the area covering modern-day Montenegro. This breed was originally bred to hunt foxes, hares and other small game animals. They were also used occasionally as hunters of wild boars and deer.

This dog breed has seen several name changes, they were called simply as the Black Hound, then known as the Yugoslavian Hound or Jugoslovenski Planinski Gonic when the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was created. After the break-up of Yugoslavia, this breed was often called as the Srpski Planinski Gonic or the Serbian Mountain Hound. This was found very inaccurate as they were not the same hounds that were bred in Serbia. The FCI or Fédération Cynologique Internationale officially changed it to the modern Montenegrin Mountain Hound name or Crnogorski Planinski Gonič in the local Montenegrin language in 1997.

The American Rare Breed Association considers the Montenegrin Mountain Hound breed as an endangered dog breed.

Personality

Montenegrin Mountain Hounds are hardy scent hounds that will display boldness, persistence and keen scenting abilities while out on the field. Although able to hunt on all kinds of terrain, these hounds are highly skilled hunters on rough terrains that is the natural landscape of the Balkan region where these dogs were first developed. Their boldness on hunting hares, foxes, deer and other quarries will be seen only on the job. At home, these hounds will be good-natured displaying gentleness and a calm demeanor.

Training

Naturally intelligent, the Montenegrin Mountain Hound will be easy to train. It is recommended to have them socialized and trained for obedience at an early age.

Health

The Montenegrin Mountain Hound is known to be very healthy.

Exercise

Montenegrin Mountain Hound dogs require average exercise sessions and should be taken on walks every day and outdoor trips every weekend.
