History

The Moscow Watchdog or Moskovskaya Storozhevaya is a dog breed that was developed in the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics or the Soviet Union and now called the Russian Federation.

This particular breed was first developed in Moscow after World War II when crime, poverty and discontent were rampant. They were specifically bred to be guard dogs that will be used to fight the rising crime rate across the Soviet Union. The Soviet Army wanted an all-weather, all-terrain and versatile watchdog that can withstand the various and extreme climate conditions and local environment across the USSR. The Moscow Watchdog was bred to guard everything owned by the Soviet government from administrative buildings, offices and other infrastructures as well as the Soviet army’s warehouses and labor camps. This breed’s development was considered as an immense project that started in 1946, led by Soviet Generals of Central School Of Military Kynology which was then a department under the Soviet Union’s Ministry of Defense. Several years of experiments resulted in this breed’s ideal foundation stock which includes St. Bernards, Caucasian Ovtcharkas and lines of the Russian Spotted Hound. This foundation stock resulted in the modern purebred that is the Moscow Watchdog, equipped with the mental and physical traits that the Soviets aimed for.

Personality

The Moscow Watchdog was created to be the Soviet Union’s versatile all-weather and all-terrain government watchdog that is intelligent, protective and obedient to their masters. This is a breed that looks like the firm, confident and more serious-looking version of the St. Bernard. Although born to guard, they are considered to be gentle giants but will display their assertiveness when protecting his family in dangerous situations and will defend their territory at all costs. This dog breed is impressively fearless and full of courage while on the job but will display its calm demeanor, friendliness and obedience when around its family.

Moscow Watchdogs were specifically bred and created by the Soviet Army to be highly trainable. It is a dog breed that can be trained to a higher degree and also capable of being trained as service dogs or seeing-eye dogs for the blind.

Health

The Moscow Watchdog is considered to be a generally healthy dog breed. The size of this breed does make it very prone to hip dysplasia.

Exercise

The Moscow Watchdog requires regular exercise. These dogs should be taken out for long walks every day. It is recommended to take this dog for jogging and given ample time to run freely across wide-open spaces.
