Introduction

The Mucuchies is a sheepdog breed that has many names. It is called Perro de los Páramos or Páramo’s dog is Venezuela, Nevado or Snowy in its native region of Sierra Nevada de Mérida and also simply called the Venezuelan Sheepdog in the United States.

History

The Mucuchies is a dog breed that originates from the Sierra Nevada de Mérida region of Venezuela. The precise date of their origin is unknown but this breed is believed to be first bred and developed in the mountainous regions of Venezuela sometime during the 1800s. The breed is the result of two centuries of breeding various Spanish mountain dog breeds, starting from the 16th century. These dogs were brought by Spanish settlers to Venezuela’s Andean region to serve as livestock herders and flock guardians. The Spanish breeds that were crossed include that Spanish Mastiff, Pyrenean Mastiff and the Great Pyrenees. Some lines of the Algerian Mastiff and the Aidi were also added into the mix.

This particular breed is Venezuela’s all-purpose mountain dog, created to be working dogs that can efficiently work on mountainous terrain and high altitude weather conditions. They were used as sheepdogs, watchdogs and protectors of livestock from intruders and mountain predators.

By the late 1920s, Mucuchies were found all across their native country and neighboring Latin-American countries. The famous Latin-American icon Simón Bolívar was depicted in painting with his Mucuchies dog named Nevado. This painting is in honor of Bolivar’s triumphant crossing of the Andes during the famous Admirable Campaign that led way to Venezuela’s independence from Spain. In 1964, the Mucuchies dog breed gained that distinction of being Venezuela’s National Dog.

Personality

The Mucuchies or Venezuelan Sheepdog is a breed famous for its intelligence, highly active nature and their very affectionate demeanor. These dogs are natural livestock guards and protectors and will display aggression towards strangers.

Bred For

The Venezuelan Sheepdog is a product of several centuries of extensive breeding to produce a very powerful and very versatile working dog that can work on the mountain ranges of Venezuela.

Environment

The Venezuelan Sheepdog is not suitable for the city. These are not apartment dogs. This breed will thrive in rural and suburban areas and require a large area to run freely and play.

Grooming

The Mucuchies require very little grooming attention.

Training

The Venezuelan Sheepdog may be intelligent and naturally bright, but this dog has been proven to be difficult to train. This is because of their stubbornness and very willful instinct, making it easily bored and very impatient. The key is to have these dogs trained by a strong and very confident dog handler.

Health

Mucuchies are dogs considered to be healthy in general.

Exercise

Mucuchies dogs are very active and require a lot of exercise to stay fit mentally and physically. These dogs should be taken out for long and brisk walks or jogging every day.
