History

These rare dogs are also known to be impressive guard and companion dogs. There was a time that the Mudi were classified together with the Puli and Pumi dog breeds. It only earned recognition as a distinct and separate breed from the two dog breeds during the 1930s.

Personality

The Mudi dog breed is known to display versatility as a working dog. They are also equipped with impressive courage. These dogs are known to be independent, but does that not make them hard to train. In fact, among the Puli and Pumi, the Muli dogs are the most trainable. They are known to have a very strong work drive that matches their very active nature.

Bred For

The Mudi dogs are versatile working dogs that are used for flock guarding, herding sheep and cattle and also as guard dogs. The Mudi can also be trained to hunt wild animals, be a ratter and also a good companion.

Environment

The Mudi is somewhat adaptable when it comes to living conditions. They can be kept as apartment pets as long as owners provide sufficient amounts of exercise and have them properly socialized and trained. The ideal home for these dogs is rural homes with a large yard where they can move about.

Health

The Mudi dog breed is among the healthiest breed known today. The common canine medical issue that is hip dysplasia may occur but this is not common to the breed.

Exercise

The Mudi requires plenty of exercises to sustain their high level of activity. These dogs should be taken on long and brisk walks every day. Having these dogs as jogging mates is ideal.
