The Munsterlander dog breeds are the breeds that are native to the Münster region of Germany. There are two distinct breeds hailing from this region:

History

Munsterlander dogs are the dog breeds that are native to Germany’s Münster region of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. There are two different dog breeds that are not related to each other but recognized as Münsterländer dogs.

• The Large Munsterlander is a gun dog that has been bred since the late 18th century. These large German hunting dogs were developed by crossing various pointing dogs.
• The Small Munsterlander is a versatile hunting dog that is grouped as a pointer as well as a retriever dog. This breed is believed to be more than 500 years old and considered to be one of the rarest breeds in the world today.

Personality

The two Münsterländer dog breeds are elite hunters.

• The Large Munsterlander is a huge gun dog that shows impressive skills, resilience and versatility when hunting in various terrains and in both land and water environment. This breed is naturally very energetic, very friendly, very vocal and even-tempered.
• The Small Munsterlander is a versatile hunting dog that can be effective pointers and retrievers. These are active dogs that will be sociable, affectionate, and sweet and love any activities that involve water!

Bred For

• Small Munsterlander dogs were bred to be versatile hunters that can point and retrieve in both land and water.
• Large Munsterlander dogs were developed to be versatile hunting dogs that can work in both land and water environments.

Environment

• Small Munsterlanders are dogs that are not suited for the city. They are also not good apartment pets. Small Munsterlander dogs will thrive in rural or suburban areas.
• Large Munsterlander will not be suitable in the residential building style of living conditions. Apartments or condos are not recommended. The ideal home setting for these large German dogs is a rural home with a large yard where they can move about.

Grooming

• Small Munsterlanders dogs require little rooming attention.
• The Large Munsterlander grooming needs depend on this breed’s gender. Large Munsterlander bitches require minimal grooming as they have shorter coats. Male dogs of this breed are covered with longer coats that require higher amounts of grooming requirements. They should be groomed every other day. These are large dogs that shed heavily and seasonally.

Training

• Small Munsterlanders dogs are highly trainable and can be trained basic obedience in a very quick time.
• The Large Munsterlander was naturally bred and trained to be able to react properly in a high-pressure type of situation. This made their obedience level very high. This trait makes the Large Munsterlander very trainable among all other pointing dogs.

Health

• Hip dysplasia is the only common medical problem that is known to affect Small Munsterlanders.
• Large Munsterlander dogs are very healthy. There are lines of this breed that may be prone to the common canine medical condition that is hip dysplasia. This health issue is uncommon for the breed but does happen.

Exercise

• Small Munsterlanders need special attention when it comes to exercise. They have high activity levels that should be sufficiently satisfied to keep them even-tempered.
• Large Munsterlander is a pointing dog that requires plenty of exercises that can sufficiently satisfy their energy needs. Taking them for brisk walks is recommended. Having them as jogging or running partners is ideal.
