History

The Norwegian Lundehund dog breed originated in Norway but the precise date of this breed’s origin has been lost. They are believed to be the direct descendants of the ancient Varanger dogs. The link between the modern Norwegian Lundehund and the ancient Varanger dogs was connected for their very similar jaw structure, unique only to the Lundehund and its ancient ancestor. These dogs were specifically bred and developed to hunt puffin birds in Norway. The selective breeding program produced a dog breed that has six toes capable of gripping sharp rocks on high cliffs. This type of terrain is where the puffin birds build their nests.

Personality

The Norwegian Lundehund is a happy and lively dog. These spitzes are well-known for their devoted disposition towards their family. These are dogs that will be wary when around strangers. Norwegian Lundehunds are not known to be dog-aggressive. They will be aggressive to small animals, especially small birds and should not be trusted when around them. This northern dog breed is well-loved in Norway for being mentally sound, physically strong and reliable when at work and at home.

Norwegian Lundehunds are dogs known for their intelligence, but they are also known for their stubbornness and indecently minded nature. Training these dogs would not be easy but possible. Patience and persistence is the key.

Health

The Norwegian Lundehund is a spitz breed commonly plagued by various diseases. Lundies are very prone to have PLE or protein-losing enteropathy. So much that this disease is often called the Lundehund syndrome! These dogs also suffer from gastrointestinal diseases especially the life-threatening intestinal enteropathy.

Exercise

Norwegian Lundehund dogs should have ample amounts of play and exercise time. Taking these spitz-type dogs out for walks every day is highly recommended.
