History

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi dog breed may have spitz blood in them as they are known to be descendants of the spitz dogs that Flemish merchants and workers brought with them when they arrived in Wales. This dog breed got its name from the area of their origin which is Pembrokeshire, Wales in Great Britain. They were bred to be an all-purpose utility dog that displayed impressive skills in herding cattle and driving ducks, geese and other bird-type stock. The Pembroke Welsh and the Cardigan Welsh are closely related to Corgi types of dogs.

Personality

Pembroke Welsh Corgis are giant dogs trapped in a small dog’s body! They are naturally very active and very intelligent. These are dogs known to be fun-loving and will display friendliness to everyone. They are dogs good to have around children but should be supervised as they may herd people. All in all, the Welsh Corgi dog breed is a devoted family dog that is well-balanced.

These dogs were bred to specifically drive cattle using their voice as well as nipping at the cattle’s heels.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi dogs are famous for being excellent show dogs. They are also one of the top breeds excelling in obedience trials. This makes the breed as one of the most trainable dog breed known today.

Health

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi dog breed is plagued with several major and minor health conditions. The most common seen on Corgis are intervertebral disc protrusion, bladder stones, PRA or progressive retinal atrophy and hip dysplasia.

Exercise

Pembroke Welsh Corgi was naturally bred to be active! These dogs require to be taken on long walks everyday to keep them stable and fit!
