Introduction

Superior hounds that are rare and with names that are hard to pronounce (well, if you are not French), the Bleu de Gascogne dog family comprises of four different scent hound breeds. The Grand Bleu de Gascogne, the Petite Bleu de Gascogne, the Petite Griffon Bleu de Gascogne and the Basset Bleu Gascogne.

History

One of four French dog breeds that are under the Bleu de Gascogne dog family, the Petite Bleu de Gascogne or Small Blue Gascony Hound is smaller compared to the Grand Bleu de Gascogne. That is because they were primarily bred for hunting small prey, specifically quarries.It is one of the rarest dog breeds in the world today, even rarer than the Grand Bleu.

Personality

The Petit Bleu de Gascogne is equipped with a superior and highly evolved nose, making these dogs as one of the top scent hound breeds, as they are still able to follow and track down even the faintest scents. It gets along extremely well with other dogs. It needs a firm, but calm, confident and consistent pack leader who provides the proper amount of mental and physical exercise and who sets the rules of the home and sticks to them. This breed will be a bit tough to train for obedience as they are naturally resourceful and determined canines.

Bred For

Hunting and tracking various sizes of the game from small to large prey.

Environment

These are not dogs suitable for apartment living conditions. They do best with families who are living active lifestyles and in suburban and rural areas.

Grooming

Pet dogs require average grooming of once a week. If used for their original purpose, this master smeller can get quite dirty during the hunt.

Training

One of the trademark traits of the Bleu de Gascogne dogs is their tendency to be stubborn, making life a bit difficult during training.

Health

Like most hounds, the Petite Bleu de Gascogne dog breed is prone to bloat, hip and elbow dysplasia.

Exercise

Petite Bleu de Gascogne needs sufficient amounts of exercise. Homes with at least an average-sized or large-sized yard will make these dogs happy.
