Introduction

The Phalene dog is one of two known types of Continental Toy Spaniels, famously known as the Papillon dog breed. The main difference between the Papillon and Phalene spaniels are in their ears. The Phalene dog variety is the drop-eared spaniel type of dogs.

The Phalene breed has long, silky hair all over the body. In addition, they are outgoing and highly-intelligent dogs always ready to play. Therefore, they are perfect as companion dogs for families with small children.

History

The Phalene is a spaniel dog breed that can trace its origins during the 1500s. Western European spaniel breeders, specifically the ones in France and Belgium developed these dogs to produce a miniature version of the larger spaniels breed that they have locally. These bred-down spaniels became popular throughout Europe as a companion dog for women of nobility and royalty.

Personality

This drop-eared Continental Toy Spaniel breed is known to show alertness. This does not mean that they are unfriendly or aggressive. However, the Phalene dogs can be very friendly and are known to get along with everyone they met including older children and other animals too.

In addition, they are very intelligent and love to please their owners. At home, the Phalene is very playful and affectionate. Therefore, they are perfect for keeping your lap warm.

Grooming

These dwarfed spaniels are considered very high maintenance when it comes to their grooming needs. They have long silky coats that require daily attention. These dogs are naturally clean and do not emit odor. The Phalene dogs shed hair in average amounts.

Training

Housebreaking these dogs will be easy as they are naturally clean. The Phalene can develop Small Dog Syndrome so training should be done early. Since they are very intelligent, training will be a breeze.

Health

Phalene dogs are plagued by various medical conditions. One alarming health issue that is common for them is having kneecaps patella. In addition, it is not uncommon for them to go through surgery because of this. They are also dogs with higher risks to have inborn fontanel defects. Although not severely allergic to anesthesia, the Phalene toy spaniels may suffer from breathing difficulties and anxiety while under this medication.

Exercise

Phalange’s may be tiny dogs but don’t get fooled by their size! They are packed with high energy. In addition, these drop-eared toy spaniels should be taken on walks every day. These should also have an ample amount of playtime. In other words, everyday physical activity is very important to maintain their health and happiness.
