Introduction

Podengo Portugueso Pequeno or Small Podengo was developed to flush rabbits from its cover but also mouse hunter’s onboard Portuguese ships. This is the smallest variety, perfectly small so that they can work efficiently on ships and also save space compared to other larger mouser dog breeds.

History

The Podengo Portugueso Pequeno originates in Portugal and was first developed during the 13th century when Portuguese explorers kept them as ratters aboard their ships.

The Smooth-Haired Podengo Portugueso Pequeno is the first coat type that traces its history onboard Portuguese ships during the 13th century. The Wire-haired Pequeno is very young as a breed, developed during the late 20th century and first shown in the US only in the early part of the 1900s.

Personality

Podengo Pequeno shares all the traits of its larger Podengo cousins. It is a Podengo Grande or Podengo Medio but packed in a small package! Unlike the other two varieties, these small Podengos are more jovial and can be absolutely silly when at home and around their family.

The Podengo Portugueso Pequeno was specifically bred to be ratters onboard 13th century Portuguese ships.

The Podengo Portugueso Pequeno is suited to city life and apartment living conditions. All verities will thrive in hot and sunny weather conditions.

Grooming

Podengo Portugueso Pequeno is a low maintenance dog when it comes to grooming. Both coat types of each size variety naturally shed dust and dirt, drying their coat quickly and making them very efficient self-cleaning dogs! These are dogs that shed hair in average amounts.

Training

Podengo Pequeno can be properly trained as long as trainers use positive methods and also use a leash to avoid this dog’s tendency to be independent and roam about.

Small Podengos are fairly healthy dogs.

Exercise
