Introduction

The Polish Tatra Sheepdog is a giant old dog breed that has mastered the terrain and weather conditions of the peaks of the Tatra Mountain within the mountainous region of southern Poland.

History

The Polish Tatra Sheepdog, or officially known in their native country of Poland as the Owczarek Podhalanski is a very huge sheepdog that has mastered mountainous terrain. These dogs were originally developed and used as herders and flock guardians. These sheepdogs got their name from the mountain ranges of Tatra up in the Carpathian Mountains of their native country. Throughout history, these flock guardians have been used for various purposes which include herding livestock, as drafting dogs and also as watchdogs. The Tatra sheepdog also proves to be a very efficient military, police and security dogs. Polish and other European breeders revitalized the Polish Tatra Sheepdog breed after their numbers were decimated during World War II. Today they are still few in numbers and considered to be one of the rarest dog breeds in the world.

Personality

The Polish Tatra Sheepdog is a massive guardian of livestock, people and property. These dogs’ sheer size and natural instinct to guard and protect may be daunting, but they are known to be composed and very clear-headed when around family. This dog will show affection but not towards strangers. They are wary and may sometimes react aggressively if provoked. This large dog breed has been known as somewhat more impressive guard dogs during the night as their alertness levels are high after dark. All in all, they are incredibly intelligent and able to react in any situation even without their masters.

Bred For

The Polish Tatra Sheepdog was developed to excel as herding, drafting and flock guardians on the mountainous terrain of southern Poland. Today there are often used as companions and guard dogs.

Environment

The Owczarek Podhalanski dogs are naturally big and natural mountain dogs. This dog breed should not be kept as apartment dogs. They are large dogs that need space. An ideal living environment would a family living in rural and suburban areas that has a home with a fenced large yard.

Grooming

These Polish sheepdogs are one of the cleanest dog breeds. They are so clean that Tatra dogs require little bathing and do not drool at all. These giant mountain dogs have a self-cleaning coat that will shed heavily once in a year.

Training

The Owczarek Podhalanski requires obedience training and socialization all throughout their lives. Training should be done early and should last until they hit maturity.

Health

This giant dog breed is like most large dogs and will be prone to hip dysplasia. Other alarming medical condition rarely happens but does occur. They vary from gastric torsion, skin allergies, and eye problems during puppyhood, patellar luxation and very rare, epileptic seizures.

Exercise

These Polish herding dogs need to be taken for walks every day if not kept as livestock guardians.
