History

The Podengo Portugueso or also known as the Portuguese Hound is a breed that originates in Portugal. The three main varieties have different backgrounds:

  • The Grande is the original and prototype Podengo where the Medio and Pequeno were bred from. They were originally developed to hunt deer and wild boar. The Grande is capable of tiring out their prey and will hold their catch until the hunter is near enough to make the shot. The Grande is the rarest of all the Podengo breeds, so rare that they are also rare in their native country.
  • The Médio is the variety that was specifically bred to specialize on rabbits. This particular Podengo are very skilled rabbit hunters that they can chase, retrieve and also flush this type of game. The Médio is capable of stalking its prey like a big cat, often jumping above the game and landing on or beside the prey to easily flush it out of anything it tries to hide under. These Podengos are also known to dig just to flush the game!
  • The Pequeno was developed to flush rabbits from its cover but also capable of being a mouse hunter onboard Portuguese ships. This is the smallest variety which was intended so that they can work efficiently on ships and also save space compared to other larger mouser dog breeds.

Personality

  • Podengo Grande are hardy and tough as they are intelligent and observant. These are efficient hunting dogs of wild boar that is capable of swiftly attacking and capturing their prey. They are great guardians of home and property. This is a dog breed known to be voracious diggers.
  • Podengo Médio is also a hardy and intelligent dog, but this variety is considered to be friendlier. They are great to have around children and other animals. These are very active hunting dogs that are famous for being watchful out in the field. Once something attracts the Medio’s attention, it will bark until it gets the hunter’s attention. They are also diggers, but excel more in jumping, leaping and climbing!
  • Podengo Pequeno shares all the traits of its larger Podengo cousins. It is a Podengo Grande or Podengo Medio but packed in a small package! Unlike the other two varieties, these small Podengos are more jovial and can be absolutely silly when at home and around their family.

Training

Podengo Grande can be well trained provided they are trained using a fair and firm method. This podengo variety should have dominant trainer that can earn the dog’s respect.
Podengo Pequeno can be properly trained as long as trainers use positive methods and also use a leash to avoid this dog’s tendency to be independent and roam about.
