Introduction

The Prazsky Krysarik is a dog breed famously called as the Prague Ratter because of its impressive talents in hunting rats! Krysarik comes from the word krysa, which is English for rats!

History

The Prazsky Krysarik or the Prague Ratter is a very old toy dog breed that originates from the historic Central European region of Bohemia, an area that is a part of the modern-day Czech Republic. The precise date of origin of these dogs is not clear but historical accounts as far back as the Middle ages prove that this breed was already considered as a distinct breed during this era. The original version of this breed was used as rat catchers across the city of Prague, which is why this breed is also called Prague Ratters.

Later on the Czechs and Slovaks developed these toy dogs to be a pure companion pet, deviating from its natural ratting purpose and made these dogs be non-utilitarian. It gained popularity with the aristocrats of Central Europe and the Prazsky Krysarik was commonly seen in aristocratic parties held at the history of Prague Castle. These dogs were used as a status symbol among the nobility and royalty in the royal courts of Bohemia. The kings of Bohemia used these toy dogs as gifts to other European royalty. Several centuries later, their aristocratic allure faded and the Prague Ratter became the commoners’ dogs.

Personality

The Prazsky Krysariks are small but compact dogs that are extremely quick, very active, always alert and have a very lively demeanor. They will be affected and will show their love towards their master. Their ratting background also makes these small dogs as very watchful and prized for their highly developed noses. Before being a companion dog for Central European royalty and nobility, the Prague Ratter was excellent hunters, catchers and killers of rats! They are intelligent, highly sociable, and very obedient and will always display its warmhearted disposition. The Prazsky Krysarik has and will always be a very noble dog, both in appearance and in behavior.

Bred For

The Prazsky Krysarik was originally used as ratters. It was turned into a pure companion dog for the royalty and commonly seen the royal courts of Bohemia. After being dogs of the princes and kings, they turned into a commoner’s dog and became popular once again as ratting dogs as well as companion pets.

Environment

The Prazsky Krysarik can be good apartment pets as long as they are sufficiently exercised. They will adapt to all kinds of living conditions, may it be in the city or in the country. These are not dogs built for cold weather.

Grooming

The Prazsky Krysarik can be quite demanding when it comes to grooming requirements. Their coats should be brushed gently at least twice a week. Wiping their coat with a damp cloth will be better. These dogs should be trimmed regularly and have their ears checked every day. These toy dogs shed hair in average amounts.

Training

Prazsky Krysariks are dogs with high intelligence making them very easy to train. They are also very docile and always eager to please.

Health

The legs on the Prague Ratter are thin-boned. This type of bone structure is a bit fragile and susceptible to fractures, dislocation and other bone affecting injuries.

Exercise

Prazsky Krysariks are small toy dogs but they are not supposed to be carried in a bag. They are very active little fellows that will require regular exercise in the form of walking every day and an ample amount of playing time.
