Introduction

There was a time when a Puli dog and Pumi were treated as one breed. However, the two Hungarian dog breeds were recognized as two separate dog breeds in the early years of the 20th century.

The Puli is an intelligent and very bold breed. This breed is a medium-small breed of sheepdog from Hungary wearing a curly coat. In addition, its coat can be very dense and shaggy and can come in a variety of colors.

History

Pumi is a dog breed that originated in Hungary during the 1700s and was bred from the ancient Puli dog breed. This particular dog breed is actually the result of three centuries of crossbreeding, starting from the 16th Century up to the 18th Century. The Pumi was created by crossbreeding the Hungarian Pulik with various European dog breeds that were brought to Hungary by immigrants and invaders. However, Pumis were developed to be herding dogs but were also used as hunting companions. In addition, before the 20th century, the Pumi and Puli dogs were indistinguishable and treated as one dog breed.

Personality

Pumi are dogs that display terrier-like traits and behaviors. As a result, this makes these dogs constantly vocal and busy. Puli dogs are bold and highly energetic. When around family, these dogs will show cheerfulness and affection. When around strangers, they will show suspicion. In addition, Pumis are also known to react aggressively if provoked.

Environment

Grooming

Training

Health

The Pumis are usually very healthy. There are no major medical problems, genetic disorders or diseases that commonly plagued the Pumi breed. However, the National Breed Club recommends some health tests. For instance, hip evaluation, patella evaluation, and degenerative myelopathy DNA test.

Exercise

The Hungarian Pumi needs plenty of activities to satisfy their exercise needs. Therefore, taking them on walks or jogging every day is imperative and very important for their health. In addition, these dogs will also require an ample amount of playing time like catching or chasing frisbees.
