Introduction

The Pungsan Dog is the ancient native dog breed of Korea. It is also called the Korean Poongsan, Korean Phungsan or the Korean Pungsan outside its native country.

History

The Pungsan Dog is a hunting dog breed that originates from North Korea, specifically the mountainous region of Pungsan now called Kimhyŏnggwŏn. The breed’s precise date of origin is not known but historical records prove that this Korean dog breed has been in existence as early the Joseon Dynasty. The Pungsan Dog was created to be hunters of panthers, depicted in Korean legends as a dog that is capable of defeating Siberian Tigers. Today, this breed is commonly used by the North Korean military to serve as an all-purpose working and guard dog. This breed is among the rarest in the world and hardly known outside its native country.

Personality

Pungsan Dogs are hunters that have a high prey dive. It has evolved into a dominant and very protective guard and watchdog. They will be fierce defenders of their family and territory. They will be independently minded and require a dominant and very experienced owner. With the right owner, these will be very loyal and obedient dogs.

Bred For

The Pungsan dog was used as hunting dogs of large prey including the Siberian Tiger.

Environment

The Pungsan dog breed will thrive in rural and suburban areas. They are dogs that should be part of the family and required to sleep indoors. They are naturally fastidious and will be okay to keep as apartment dogs if they are well trained.

Grooming

The Pungsan dog will require special attention and plenty of grooming time when it is shedding. These dogs shed heavily two times a year and should be brushed every day during this period.

Training

The Pungsan dog will be hard to train and will often display their dominant and independent nature. It is advisable to have them trained by a very experienced dog handler.

Health

The Pungsan dog is considered to be a fairly healthy dog breed.

Exercise

The Pungsan dog breed will demand lots of space and lots of exercises. These dogs should be taken out for long walks, jogging or running every day.
