Introduction

The Seppala Siberian Sleddog breed was actually one and the same with the Siberian Husky. Today, it is slowly being recognized as a distinct and separate breed from the Siberian Husky. The Seppala Siberian Sleddog is considered to be the working line, while the Siberian Husky is the show line.

History

The Seppala Siberian Sleddog is a rare working dog breed that originates from Canada and shares the same history with the Siberian Husky. This is because the two northern dog breed was recognized as one and the same. At the turn of the 20th century, the Seppala Siberian Sleddog was recognized as a separate and distinct breed from its Siberian Husky cousin. This particular sleddog breed was specifically created to be pure working dogs and not as show dogs which other sleddog breeds became after the popularity of sled races waned.

These husky-type dogs were developed, bred and named after the iconic sleddog driver Mr. Leonhard Seppala. He managed to produce and more dominating sleddog breed compared to the Siberian Husky. So dominant as sleddogs that the Seppala Siberian Sleddogs were the champions of the All-Alaska Sweepstakes distance race, dominating the competition from the throughout the 1910’s decade.

Personality

The Seppala Siberian Sleddog is a natural working dog breed that will be very active and packed with high levels of stamina and endurance. When not working, these northern dogs will display their innate docile disposition and high intelligence, making these dogs very trainable. They will be good around children and other dogs as well as other pet animals if raised with them since their puppyhood stage. Overall, this is a sled dog that loves to work and will be a wonderful family pet if their owners devote time to sufficiently satisfy their energy requirements.

Training

Training Seppala Siberian Sleddogs will require patience and a firm and consistent method. It is advisable that these dogs be trained by experienced dog handlers with a deep understanding of an Arctic dog breed’s temperament.

Health

The Seppala Siberian Sleddog is known to be prone to various allergies, eye problems and even several types of cancers.

Exercise

The Seppala Siberian Sleddog was developed to be pure working dogs and exercise should be a regular part of their daily lives. They should be taken out for long walks every day and given time to play or perform sledding activities. During summer, activities should be lessened.
