History

The Shih-Tzu is believed to be a very old dog breed that originated in China and have existed since the 7th century during the Tang Dynasty period. This toy dog breed is one of the most well-documented dog breeds in history as they were commonly depicted in ancient Chinese arts from stone and wood carvings, to embroideries and even in paintings. These dogs were exclusively bred in Beijing within the walls of the Forbidden City. The precise reason for the Shih-Tzu dog’s creation is quite unclear. Some dog experts believe that these dogs were bred to resemble the tame lion. Some say that these toy dogs were created to look like the sacred Buddhist Fo Dog. For several centuries only the Chinese royalty can own a Shih-Tzu. During the Mao Tse Tsung led the Chinese Revolution, this dog breed was nearly decimated for their association with the imperial and ruling elite. The Shih-Tzu was only saved through the efforts of English and American breeders continued breeding them outside of China.

Personality

Shih-Tzu dogs are companions at heart and will display friendliness and very trusting disposition. They are very lively as they are alert, but these dogs will get along with children, other animals and even strangers!

Bred For

Shih-Tzu is a dog breed that was once bred exclusively for Chinese royalty and was kept as companion pets. They were created to look like the Fo Dog which is a very sacred symbol for the Buddhist religion.

Environment

The Shih Tzu will be a good apartment pet. They are dogs that are known to be sensitive to heat or warm weather conditions.

Grooming

Shih-Tzu is a small dog that needs regular grooming. Brushing should be done religiously. They are toy dogs that shed hair in little amounts to none at all. Shih-Tzu dogs will be great for people with allergies.

Training

The Shih-Tzu can be difficult to train and housebreak. Positive, firm and consistent training should be done.

Health
