Introduction

The Short-haired Weimaraner or simply called the Weimaraner is the official and standard dog breed that is recognized by most kennel clubs and canine registries. This dog breed became so popular during the 1950s when a magazine featured a Weimer Pointer on its cover. It started the Weimaraner craze, giving this dog breed the reputation of being “the new wonder dog”.

Technically speaking the Short-haired Weimaraner is the popularly known Weimaraner dog breed. In its native country Germany, this dog breed is officially known as the Weimaraner Vorstehhund. It is also called by other names including Grey Ghost, Gray Ghost, Short-haired Weim, Weim and Short-haired Weimer Pointer.

History

The Short-haired Weimaraner originated during the 19th century in Germany’s Weimar Court. The aristocrats of this royal court specifically created the breed to be the hunting dogs of large game type of animals the dwells deep in the Thüringen Forest. Later on, these dogs evolved into an entirely different hunting dog. They became bird hunters, a job that these dogs quickly adapted to. Their stealth skills favored this new job and these dogs were recognized as excellent bird dogs.

Personality

Weimaraners are excellently equipped with a lean and muscular physique. These are dogs that use intelligence during the hunt and often display quiet and stealth skills. At home, Weimer dogs are fun-loving but will always remain highly energetic. These dogs are strong-willed and will do anything and everything to achieve their goal.

Bred For

Short-haired Weimaraners were originally bred to hunt big game such as bears, deers and wolves that dwells in the Thüringen forest. Today they are mostly used as bird dogs, water retrievers and even as companions.

Environment

Short-haired Weimaraners can be kept as apartment pets provided that their owners if they are sufficiently exercised.

Grooming

The shorthaired and longhaired varieties of the Weimaraners are easy to groom and requires little attention to keep it in tip-top shape. These are dogs that shed hair in average amounts.

Training

Short-haired Weimaraners are naturally intelligent but it will be difficult to train. This is because of their single-minded and stubborn traits. It is advised to have them professionally trained.

Health

Short-haired Weimaraners have a record of being at high risk in acquiring gastric problems mainly their proneness to bloat. These dogs are also prone to various cancers, eye disorders, dermoid cysts and Von Willebrand’s disease. A genetic birth defect called dwarfism is common to some lines of this German dog breed.

Exercise

Short-haired Weimaraners are dogs that require special attention when it comes to their activity needs. Highly energetic dogs need vigorous exercise sessions on a daily basis. Owners should take these dogs on long brisk walks every day.
