Introduction

The Spanish Greyhound, known in its native country as the Galgo Espanol is believed to be one of the oldest dog breeds today. Unfortunately, the ancient Spanish Greyhound breed is also one of the most persecuted dog breeds today as reported by The Galgo Rescue International Network or GRIN, a US-based non-profit animal welfare organization that is dedicated to the welfare of the Spanish Greyhound and Sighthounds worldwide.

History

Spanish Greyhounds are greyhound types of dogs that were developed in Spain and are believed to be several centuries old. These dogs are the descendants of Asian Greyhounds which was brought to Spain by the Arabs. The Spanish Greyhound is also believed to be descendants of the Ibizan Hounds. Some dog experts believe that they are more closely related to the Sloughi dog breed.
They were originally bred and used by inhabitants of the steps and mountain ranges of the Iberian Peninsula. The natives of the area used these dogs for hare coursing as well as for hunting small games. It reached the British Isles between the 16th and 18th centuries where Irish and English breeders use them for greyhound racing.

Personality

Spanish Greyhounds are considered to be very excellent pets for their gentleness with children. These dogs will show devotion to a family. Outdoors, these dogs will be active and will love to play. Indoors will be sedentary.

Training

Spanish Greyhounds are obedient and eager to please making these dogs very easy to train.

Health

Spanish Greyhounds are very healthy and there are no known medical conditions that affect their health.

Exercise

These Spanish dogs should be taken on long walks or jogging every day.
