Adopt a Spanish Mastiff, Dog Breed Guide

Introduction

There are two varieties of Spanish Mastiff or Mastín Español that are being bred in Spain today:

• • • The Mastin Pesado or Heavy Mastiff
    • The Mastin Ligero or Light Mastiff.

The Mastin Pesado is a large and heavy working dog used in Northern Spain’s mountainous regions. The Mastin Ligero is the lighter, faster and more agile dogs that are considered somewhat more refined than their large cousins. This is the variety commonly used in Southern Spain, specifically in Andalucia and the Meseta.

They are not considered as unique and separate breeds but rather as varieties that can be interbred. May it be the Mastin Ligero or the Mastin Pesado, the Mastín Español is the largest of all Spanish dog breeds. The Spanish Mastiff is officially recognized as the National Dog Breed of Spain.

History

The Spanish Mastiff was originally bred and was very popular in Spain’s Estremadura region. This breed is believed to have already existed in various areas across the Iberian Peninsula during the times of the Phoenicians. They are the descendants of the ancient Molosser dog that hails from parts of the Middle East and Central Asia. The Spanish Mastiff or Mastín Español was created to be natural guard dogs that are capable of guarding sheep and other livestock, properties and homes. These mastiffs were also used as protectors that can go head-to-head against wolves, with historical records proving this dating as far back as the 15th century. Today, the Spanish Mastiffs are still used for their original guard dog purposes but are also famous for being companion pets and family dogs. The Spanish Mastiff is so loved and very well used in Spain, that it was named as the country’s official national dog breed. It is now commonly bred and has a huge population in Spain’s mountainous northwestern province of Leon.

The Spanish Mastiff is closely related and share similar traits with the Anatolian Shepherd Dog. This breed is also the progenitor of the Portuguese Rafeiro do Alentejo. It also played a huge role in developing the modern St. Bernard, Dogo Argentino and other mastiff breeds.

Personality

Spanish Mastiffs known to be highly protective and very territorial, they are after all bred to be natural guard dogs. The Spanish mastiffs will be reserved and wary dogs when around strangers. These large dogs will display great affection towards friends and families. They are naturally intelligent, independent, alert and considerably watchful but very calm.

Training

Spanish Mastiffs are dogs that should be trained extensively for obedience and socialization.

Health

Spanish Mastiffs are generally healthy. This large dog breed may suffer from hip dysplasia. Spanish Mastiffs are heavy droolers and loud snorers.

Exercise

The Spanish Mastiff is a giant dog breed that requires “giant” activity needs. Taking these large dogs on Long walks every day is not just recommended, it is a requirement!
