History

Spanish Water Dogs are gun dogs that were originally bred in Spain as versatile water dogs that can work as water retrievers as well as sheepherders. It is believed that these Spanish gun dogs are one of the oldest variety of Barbet dogs or perhaps an old variety of water dogs that are native in Spain. This particular breed has been used for several centuries in Spain’s southern region, specifically in Andalusia; this is why they are also called the Turco Andaluz. Andalusian shepherds used this breed as sheep and goat herders. It was only recognized as a distinct breed during the 1970s.

Spanish Water dogs are active and love to have fun. They are hard-working, obedient, and will display faithfulness to their masters.

Spanish Water Dogs are versatile dogs with high intelligence and are hard-working making them easy to train.

Medical problems such as various eye problems and hip dysplasia are the most common recorded health issues that the Spanish Water Dog are prone to have.
