Introduction

The Staghound traces its roots to the early years of the New World and the following decades of colonization up to the birth of the American Revolution. These dogs were bred by early European Settlers who wanted a fit coursing dog that can outmatch the coyote.

History

The Staghound has been breed for centuries. They are not recognized as purebreds as these dogs were bred not for type or form, but for their functionality. These dogs are the product of crosses between other hounds, Greyhounds and the Scottish Greyhound.

Personality

The Staghound can be considered as a dog with a dual personality. They are totally different dogs when at home and when outdoors. When at home these stag hounds will show inactiveness to the point of being lethargic. Once outdoors, their natural instinct to be mobile will be displayed. Although these dogs were originally bred to be hunting dogs by using their sight, these dogs display admirable traits to consider them as great family pets. They are very gentle, affectionate and patient when it around family. These dogs are not dog-aggressive. All in all, they are a very well balanced dog breed.

Bred For

These dogs were developed to be coursing hounds. They are impressive chasers of wolves and coyotes. They are also excellent sighthounds.

Environment

For their sheer size, the Staghound dogs are not ideal for apartment living conditions. They can do well in urban types of living only if sufficiently exercised. These large dogs will not be suitable for cold climate conditions.

Grooming

Large hair covered dogs like the Staghound are a bit high maintenance when it comes to grooming. Although their grooming needs range from minimal to average, grooming should be done regularly.

Training

The Staghound can be a well-trained dog only if trained using a gentle and consistent approach. Being patient during training will result to an obedient dog.

Health

The Staghounds have no hereditary or genetic medical conditions that plague them. Their rarity and long breeding history have resulted in a very healthy medical history. It is important to know that these staghounds are very sensitive to anesthetics. Obesity commonly occurs if feeding is not supervised.

Exercise

The Staghound will behave differently at home and when outside. When at home, these large dogs are calm and will show inactivity. Once outside, these sighthounds will be highly mobile. Taking them for long walks every day should keep their behavior stable when outdoors.
