Introduction

The Standard German Spitz or Mittelspitz is the original and first German Spitz breed that is the prototype of the Toy and Giant German Spitz varieties. It is also called as the Medium-sized German Spitz. Unlike the other varieties of German Spitzes, the Mittelspitz is the only variety that was bred for work. The other varieties were all created to be companion pets.

History

The Standard German Spitz or Mittelspitz originated in Germany and is considered to be one of the oldest dogs among all the breeds that come from Europe’s central region. German literature depicted the Standard German Spitz to have been in existence as early as the middle 1400s. This breed is believed to be the descendants of ancient spitz-type dogs that were already being domesticated during the Stone Age period.

The Standard German Spitz is the prototype variety where the Toy and the Giant German Spitz were bred from. The Mittelspitz is also closely related to the Chow-Chow, Akita and once considered as the same breed as the American Eskimo Dog.

Personality

Standard German Spitzes are generally fun-loving dogs. These naturally gentle and will be friendly towards everyone including children and other dogs. They will also be tolerant with other animals. The Standard German Spitzes have a high level of intelligence as well as the eagerness to learn. This makes them one of the most trainable dog breeds today.

Bred For

The Mittelspitz dogs were originally bred and used as a resourceful farm working dog.

Environment

Standard German Spitzes will good apartment pets. They are also dogs suited for indoor life.

Standard German Spitzes should be regularly groomed to help keep their coat in tip-top shape.
