Adopt a Stephen’s Stock Mountain Cur, Dog Breed Guide

Introduction

The Stephens’ Stock Mountain Cur was just a line of the Mountain Cur. This variety was famous for having an all-black coat. Today it is considered as a separate dog breed from the Mountain Cur and recognized by the United Kennel Club on U.K.C. on November 1, 1998, with an official set of standards listed for this Cur-type breed.

History

The Stephens’ Stock Mountain Cur is a dog breed that originates in America’s southern State of Kentucky. This is a Cur variety that originally was just line of the Mountain Cur dog breed. Years of selected breeding made the little black Stephen’s Stock Cur dogs as sufficient enough to be recognized as a distinct and separate breed from the Mountain Cur. The breed got its name in honor of their pioneer breeder, Mr. Hugh Stephen’s who bred the all-black Cur dog in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Stephen specifically bred them to be an all-black coated Cur that will be excellent at hunting squirrels and raccoons and also capable to hunt in packs when hunting big game such as bears and mountain lions.

Personality

The Stephen’s Stock Mountain Cur is a true blue hunting dog that will be active and very lively on and off the job. The high activity level of these dogs adds up to their intense and very aggressive hunting capabilities. They are team players, bred to work and hunt in packs. This makes the Stephen’s Stock Cur tolerant and non-aggressive to other dogs and breeds. These Cur-type dogs should not be trusted when around non-dog animals especially small pets. Their natural aggressive trait makes them suspicious when around strangers. Being excellent family companions come naturally to this breed.

Training

The Stephens Cur god breed is one of the most trainable Cur or Feist-type dogs. They are also very responsive and will be quicker to train if positive training methods are used. These dogs do need to be socialized early to curb that highly aggressive behavior.

Health

Most Cur-type dogs are very healthy and Stephen’s Stock Mountain Cur breed is one of the healthiest on this dog group.

Exercise

Stephen’s Stock Cur is packed with high levels of energy. This should be attended to with hunting or playtime. These are dogs that should be given an ample amount of playtime where they can run free in wide-open spaces.
