Adopt a Tibetan Terrier, Dog Breed Guide

Introduction

Tibetan Terriers, although called terriers are not actually members of the terrier dog family. They are not related to any terrier dog breed in the world. They are believed to be the ancestors of the modern Lhasa Apso.

History

The Tibetan Terrie can trace its origins before the time of Christ. It is believed to have been in existence for more than 2,000 years. These dogs were bred to be guardians of Buddhist monasteries in Tibet’s famous Lost Valley. These guard dogs were also used as livestock herders. Tibetan monks preferred to have these dogs as companions. For many centuries, Tibetan Terriers cannot be purchased. Tibetan monks consider these dogs are holy and should not be desecrated with material wealth such as currency. They were only given as gifts.

Personality

Tibetan Terriers are naturally reserved and wary when around strangers. These companion dogs will display loyalty and affection towards their family and friends. Their intelligence and good-natured disposition are innate to these dogs. Much like the Buddhist monks who bred and created them, these dogs are calm and friendly to anyone and everyone they meet.

Bred For

Tibetan Terriers were bred as guard dogs at Tibetan monasteries. They are also the preferred companion dogs of Buddhist monks. These dogs were also used as special gifts.

Environment

The Tibetan Terrier is one of the most adaptable dog breeds today. They will do okay in any living conditions may it be in the city, in the country or in a suburban area. They are also great apartment pets. These dogs can be pets for a big family or a companion for a single and sedentary person.

Grooming

The Tibetan Terrier is high maintenance when it comes to their grooming needs. These dogs require an extensive amount of grooming attention and effort. These dogs are known to be non-shedding dogs. The Tibetan Terrier is an ideal companion for people with allergies.

Training

They are naturally intelligent and obedient, making them one of the highly trainable breeds originating from Tibet.

Health

Tibetan Terriers are prone to develop eye problems specifically PRA or Progressive Retinal Atrophy. They are also very prone to develop hip dysplasia. The Tibetan Terriers are very sensitive to fleas!

Exercise

The Tibetan Terriers are dogs that should be taken on long and brisk walks every day and regular running or jogging sessions.
