Introduction

The Toy Xoloitzcuintli dog breed has different names in the United States and in Mexico. In the US Toy varieties of Xolo, dogs are formally called Toy Xoloitzcuintli or Toy Mexican Hairless Dog. In Mexico, the Toy variety is called Miniature. What they call the Miniature Xolo dog breed in the US is called the Intermediate Xoloitzcuintli in this breed’s native country. There are also two varieties of coat types for this particular breed. They are hairless and short-coated varieties.

History

The Toy Xolo or Miniature Mexican Hairless dog breed is one of the oldest and most ancient dog breeds still existing today. These small dogs are also the smallest variety of the Xoloitzcuintli dog family. They are famously known as Miniature or Toy Mexican Hairless dogs but in fact, there are two varieties of this breed when it comes to coats. These are the popular Hairless types and the other is the less known Short-Coated types. Toy Xoloitzcuintli were bred to be companion dogs but also kept for various purposes. In Mayan and Toltec cultures, these dogs were treated as sacred dogs. In Aztec cultures, they were used for medicinal purposes. When the Spaniards arrived in South America, these dogs became protection and companion dogs.

Personality

The Toy Mexican Hairless dogs are known to display faithfulness and will be a very affectionate pet. They are dogs that will be wary when around strangers. Intermediate Xolo dogs are very active as they are very happy. All Xolo varieties are very intelligent and will display a demeanor that is calm and good-natured. Proper socialization of these dogs will make them get along with children of all ages and other animals as well.

Environment

All the varieties of Xolo dogs are great apartment pets! They are also dogs that should be living indoors.

Grooming

The Toy Xoloitzcuintli dog breed has two varieties of coats. The hairless will require no grooming attention but should have their skin checked for infections regularly. The short-haired Xolo dogs are very easy to groom.

Training

All size and coat varieties of this hairless dog breed are highly intelligent. This makes them very easy to train.

Health

Toy Xolo dogs are known to have acne, missing teeth and various allergies ranging from skin problems to food-related reactions. These hairless dogs have sturdy skin but do acquire skin infections if not regularly checked.

Exercise

All the varieties of Xolo dogs need to be taken on walks every day.
