Introduction

The Devon Rex is a short-haired domesticated cat breed that originates in England sometime during the 1960s. These slender and wavy coated cats are famous for being capable of learning and performing difficult tricks! This cat is one of few cat breeds known today that can recognize their owner’s name. They can also recognize their own name!

Official Name

Devon Rex

The Devon Rex is also called Pixie cats, Poodle cats and even Alien cats. The Poodle Cat nickname was given to the Devon Rex for its ability to wag their tails when in a happy mood. The Pixie and Alien cat nickname is because of the Devon Rex’s very large set of ears that resembles a satellite dish.

Origin

The Devon Rex cat breed originates in Buckfastleigh, Devon, the United Kingdom sometime during 1960. The first Devon Rex was discovered among a litter of cats coming from a domesticated cat that turned feral.

History

Unlike other cat breeds that were developed and created after seeing a genetic mutation from a litter of domestic household cats, the Devon Rex was discovered! Ms. Beryl Cox discovered a litter of kittens from a domesticated pair of that had become feral. The feral tomcat has a unique shorthaired and curly coat and the mother is Calico female.

Among the littler was a brownish-black coated male who shared the same short-haired and curly coat with his feral father. It is believed that the feral father and mother of the litter is related to each other as the Devon Rex’s gene that caused the curly coat mutation is recessive and must be present in both parents.

Initially, the lone male of the litter with a curly coat was thought to be closely related to the Cornish Rex. When the official breeding development of this breed was started, the lone male was crossed with a Cornish Rex but produced a litter that all have straight coats. From this mating, the Cornish Rex and the Devon Rex were proven not related.

The Devon Rex cat breed first reached the United States in the year 1968. By the year 1972, the American Cat Fanciers Association or ACFA has recognized and accepted Devon Rex as a distinct breed that is eligible for Championship. In 1979, the breed was accepted by The International Cat Association. By 1983 the Cat Fanciers’ Association recognized the breed and accepted made it eligible for Championship.

Personality

The Devon Rex cat is known to be people-oriented and a feline that just loves to snuggle and cuddle. These cats are also known for their very affectionate demeanor. The breed is affectionately called the Poodle cat for its very high intelligence. These cats are so smart that they can be taught difficult tricks and also recognize their own name as well as their masters. The Devon Rex is also known for its devoted and loyal disposition. These cats will often display courage and their playful side. These are very energetic and curious cats known to be leapers, climbers, shoulder perchers, lap sitters, tail-waggers, jumpers and even retrievers!

Standards

Appearance
The Devon Rex is famous for its very huge satellite-dish-like ears that make them look like mischievous pixies or curious aliens. These cats have curly coats with very few or no whisker hairs at all.

General
The Devon Rex is very similar to the Cornish Rex when it comes to the curliness of the coats. The difference between the two breeds is that the Devon Rex cat has all three layers of hair. Its unique and somewhat ethereal appearance makes it distinguishable among all other cat breeds.

Body
The Devon Rex has a muscular and hard body built that is slender and medium in length. These cats have a broad chest and a medium-fine boning structure. The body appears to be carried high on the legs.

Head, Ears and Eyes
The Devon Rex has a head that is modified wedge in shape and is slightly longer than broad. The ears are jumbo in size and set very low that is very wide at the base and tapering to a rounded top. The Devons’ ears are covered with very fine fur. The eyes of these cats are also large and set wide with an oval shape that is sloping towards the outer portions of the ears. Eye colors will depend on the coat color.

Coat and Tail
The Devon Rex cat has long and fine tails that are tapering and well covered with fine short fur. The cat’s coat varies in density with the greatest seen on the cat’s back, sides, tail, legs and ears. It is soft and fine in texture but full-bodied in thickness and varies from short to very short in length. There is an apparent rippled wave appearance.

Color
The Devon Rex cat comes in all colors and patterns.

Health

The Devon Rex is considered to be a healthy domesticated feline breed but some lines are prone to hereditary heart diseases such as the HCM or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Some lines may also be at high risk of acquiring hereditary muscle disorder called Spasticity or hereditary myopathy or muscular dystrophy, it causes progressive muscle dysfunction. Patellar luxation, hip dysplasia and osteoarthritis does occur but considered rare to this breed.
