Introduction

The European Burmese is a cat that basically belongs to the Burmese cat breeds group. This specific Burmese breed is a different breed from the Birman or Sacred Cat of Burma. A more simple explanation of the European Burmese cat breed is that these are the Burmese cats that are bred mostly in England and parts of Europe as opposed to the cats bred in America.

The European Burmese cat is recognized as a distinct breed distinct from the original Burmese Cat by the Cat Fanciers Association or CFA. The Livre Officiel des Origines Félines or LOOF recognizes two different Burmese breeds, one of which is the European Burmese cat which later on was named by this organization as English Burmese.

Official Name

European Burmese

The LOOF once named this breed as European but changed it to English Burmese cat as most European bred Burmese can trace its roots to the American Burmese (which is the other Burmese breed recognized by this feline association).

Origin

Basically, the European Burmese can trace their origins to the original Burmese cat breed originates in the Kingdom of Siam now modern-day Thailand. This original Burmese feline breed is believed to be a very ancient cat breed that has existed as early as the 13th century, having first appeared in Siam and then later brought to Burma after the Burmese-Siamese war. A local Siamese poem with matching illustrations dating back several centuries ago depicted the existence of three local cats with corresponding local names. The one called Thong Daeng is considered to be very similar in appearance to the modern Burmese cat.

The European Burmese and the English Burmese or also called British Burmese are the Burmese cats that originate in England. These cats were originally a distinct breed that is separate and distinguishable from the American bred Burmese between the years 1945 to 1950. The forefathers of the original European Burmese cats arrived in England in the year 1945 from Burma. Later on, Burmese cats imported from America by Mrs. Lillian France were added to the gene pool of the European Burmese or English Burmese cats to form its foundation stock.

History

The European Burmese cat can trace its history as far back as the 18th century in Southeast Asia where all the Burmese and other Asian or Oriental cats are rooted from. But the modern European Burmese has more close relations to the first Burmese cats that were brought to England after World War II. In 1945, Burmese cats were brought by to England British soldiers coming home from Burma. They were later on bred with the American Burmese which first reached England during the later part of the 40’s decade, brought by Mrs. Lillian France. During the 1950s there was already an enriched population of British Burmese cats. Succeeding mating produced a significantly different Burmese variety that of the American Burmese. This eventually led to the breed’s official and serious breeding program by British can fanciers.

Personality

The European Burmese is generally people-oriented and very affectionate cats. These cats will enjoy the company of family and friends. European Burmese cats are not suited to be alone for long periods of time and will require a reasonable amount of interaction with their human owners. These cats are not independent in nature and will feel depressed if left isolated. European Burmese cats are vocal felines but relatively quieter as they vocalize in lower volume than other Oriental cat breeds. Cats of this variety are known to form bonds with their chosen humans. They are known to be aggressive towards other cats and capable of defending themselves against larger adversaries.

The British, English or European Burmese cat breed has a more Oriental feature with a moderate body type that is slender and has gently rounded contours and a triangular-shaped head compared to the other Burmese breeds.

Body
European Burmese cats have medium-sized bodies that are muscular and compact. These cats have chests that are rounded in shape and ample in mass. The back area is well leveled from the cat’s shoulder down to its tail.

Head, Ears and Eyes
European Burmese are cats that have a slightly rounded head. These cats also have ears that are slightly tilting forward, broad at the base and slightly round tips. The eyes are large and alert and will be set well apart from each other. The top part of the eyes will be curved slightly, with an oriental slant. The lower parts of the eyes are rounded in shape.

Coat and Tail
European Burmese cats have medium-length tails that are not thick at the base and tapering slightly to a rounded tip. These cats have short and fine coats that are very glossy and satin-like in texture. This breed almost lacks an undercoat.

European Burmese come in Brown, Blue, Chocolate, Lilac, Red, Cream, Tortoiseshells, Born Tortie, Blue Tortie, Chocolate Tortie and Lilac Tortie.

Health

The European Burmese cat breed also shares the same medical problems affecting the other Burmese cat breeds. Medical issues that may occur to this European bred Burmese cat may include diabetes and the genetic disease known as hypokalaemia.
