The Almost Home Pet Adoption Center is a no-kill facility owned
and operated by the Humane Society/SPCA of Nelson County. It
is located at the intersection of Rt. 29 North and Stagebridge
Road (Rt. 624) , just two miles north of Lovingston. Presently the
facility is open daily from 1 P.M. to 4 P.M.
The Adoption Center houses dogs and cats. The dogs are contained in individual rooms, one or two to a room, with wall murals painted by area artists and hemi-sync music from a sound system donated by the Monroe Institute. Visitors are encouraged to spend time in the rooms getting acquainted with the dogs and cats prior to adoption. Cats and kittens are housed in colorful cat condos with handcrafted furniture for climbing and perching.
Adoption fees cover the cost of vaccinations, worming, heartworm test or feline leukemia/aids test and spaying/neutering. All adult animals are provided these veterinary services prior to adoption. Kittens and puppies are adopted out with neutering certificates
covering the cost of these veterinary services at the appropriate age.
Many of the animals come from unclaimed or surrendered animals at the Nelson County Animal Control Facility.
These animals have been judged to be adoptable based on temperament and looks. The
Center does accept animals being surrendered by Nelson residents on a space available and
adoptability basis.
I am a volunteer. Among other things, I take photos of animals and post them on the internet for exposure to the public.

About Lenny
Distance: 212 Miles
UPDATE 7/4/2020
Precious Lenny arrived on 6/24/2020—owner surrendered because they have too many dogs. He is an 8-month-old Heeler/JRT (mix) and he weighs @40 pounds. (His birthday is 10/22/19.) He wears a cute red and white coat and his big brown eyes, circled in black, will melt your heart.
Right now, Lenny is shy and worried because he is a smart, careful dog. It is understandable that he is concerned that everything and everyone he has ever known, has suddenly disappeared from his life, and he seems to be assessing everything new to determine if it is dangerous or not.
Sigrid says: “Lenny is trying to come to trust people but is still unsure. Because of his nervousness, he likely would not thrive well in a chaotic household with lots of children or visitors. The person who surrendered him said he is not good with cats. Lenny would likely do best in a calm environment with experienced dog lovers who are very patient.”
In the past couple of weeks, he has developed a friendship with Fonda and she took these photos of him. Fonda says: “He turned to mush when I sat in his room with him and took his photos. He even pawed at me so I would not stop petting him. He is very handsome.”
He is also growing to trust Renee and Scott (they feed him) and is affectionate with them too.
Lenny will do best in a calm household with adults who give him the time necessary for him to trust them. He needs a person very savvy about fear issues who knows how to work patently to gain his trust.
