Introduction

Standard Dachshund is one of Germany’s most famous dog breeds. These hotdog-like dogs may be comical in appearance but their shortened legs and lengthened bodies were precisely developed for a purpose: to hunt and follow badgers and rabbits deep underground! Hunting these types of small games can be difficult as these animals love to dive into small burrows. Thus the dog breed’s birth!

Officially there are just two types of Dachshund:

• The Standard
• The Miniature.

In some parts of the world, three sizes of this native German dog breed is recognized:

• The Standard Dachshund
• The Miniature Dachshund
• The Toy Dachshund

There are also three varieties of coat seen in size variants:

• Short Haired
• Wire-haired
• Longhaired

Dachshund
The Dachshund is the official name for the Standard Dachshund variety of this dog breed. Across the world, it is called by various names and nicknames including Doxie, Wiener-Dog, Hotdog Dog, Sausage Dog, Long Dog, Little Burrow Dog, Earth Dog, Badger Dog, Dacksel, Teckel, Tekkel Doxie, Bassotto, Sosis, Worshond and Perro Salchicha.

History

This dog breed got its name from the German word “Dachs”, which translates to badger. These types of burrowing animals were the original reason for the dog breed’s development. During the 1600s, there were no available hunting dogs that are small enough to chase and capture badgers, as well as rabbits, when these game animals scurry down their burrows. The Standard Dachshund’s elongated bodies, shortened legs and lengthy muzzle make it the perfect hunting weapon for these ground burrowers.

Personality

Standard Dachshunds are dogs of duality. They will show their good-tempered characteristics that are friendly, affectionate, fun-loving, and playful as well as being pretty smart. But they can also show their negative side, being jealous, irritable, and obstinate and sometimes, biting with just the smallest provocations.

Bred For

Developed to hunt badgers. Today Standard Dachshund dogs are used as hunting dogs as well as companion pets.

Environment

Standard Dachshund dogs are not ideal for apartment life, although they are known to be one of the most adaptable home pets today. Proper and sufficient training will make them suitable for city, rural and suburban living conditions.

Grooming

Special needs and attention should be done on Standard Dachshund dogs with non-smooth coats.

Training

These dogs are slightly difficult to train and housebreak, but it is not impossible. Patience is needed.

Health

Possible health problems facing the Standard Dachshund dog are the tendency to get bloated, epilepsy, hypothyroidism, intervertebral disc disease.

Exercise

Standard Dachshund dogs are packed with unbelievable stamina inside that hot-dog like bodies. Dachshunds, the standard or miniature version should be walked daily.
