History

The Pharaoh Hound dog breed is the official National Dog of Malta. They are so love in their native country that these dogs have their own silver coins! These coins bear the Pharaoh hound’s likeness. The Pharaoh Hound dogs are famous because of their similarities to the ancient Egyptian dogs depicted in history as the pets of Egyptian Pharaohs. Although very similar to the ancient hounds of Egypt, the Pharaoh Hounds of Malta have no link to this dog of antiquities. They are the modern recreation of the hound dogs used by the ancient Egyptians.

Personality

The Pharaoh Hounds are dogs that are known to have high intelligence. These dogs are naturally eager to please their masters. Modern Pharaoh Hounds are famous for being highly trainable and quick to learn. The Maltese sighthounds are affectionate and playful when around family but will be wary when confronted by new faces. They are also catlike somewhat discriminating towards other people. The Pharaoh hound dogs are known breed to have capabilities to blush and smile among all other dog breeds!

Bred For

Maltese people used them as hunting dogs for rabbits and hares.

Environment

They are not suitable for apartment type living. These dogs will do best in rural and suburban areas.

Grooming

These dogs have minimal grooming needs. But they do have sensitive skin. These dogs have no noticeable odor, except when wet or when they’ve been outside.

Training

These dogs’ ability for training is preferably fair considering they can be quite stubborn and hard to please.

Health

These dogs are basically free from genetic diseases.

Exercise

The Pharaoh Hounds are a very active breed but, like greyhounds, as indoor dogs, they are happy couch campers and need a little exercise.
